Studying abroad has always been a subject of contention amongst the youth esp. those who have big dreams and aim to make it to the top someday. In recent times, it has become an almost set pattern for individuals to go overseas for further studies, once school days are over and at the crossroads of choosing a program – which will give them a more secure future, not to forget the fame & popularity that one longs for.
In order to accomplish such goals & desires, there are a few factors that one needs to keep in mind, so that the optimum output can be gained from the decision. A few of them that we think are essential and can be the deciding factors are – Choosing the Right Destination. This is quite crucial when the time comes to pick one, as the culture, tradition, terrain, weather, language etc. play a pivotal role in moving forward.
The next point that is very significant is the Academic Goals of the student. One must always keep in mind that in the program (and university) one chooses to study at, the academics & career objectives are compatible and lead to what the candidate has in mind. Also, the language proficiency & any other prerequisites are being met, before finalizing.
Next in line is what makes the objective practically feasible, which is pertaining to the fees and expenses, essentially the Financial Planning. A budget needs to be put in place as it is the backbone of any transaction esp. when it involves a substantial portion of your bank balance. In addition, one needs to take into account Visa & Immigration requirements as well as the application process for your chosen destination. Also, one must ensure that the passport is valid, considering the duration of stay.
Another thing that most people forget while planning to go abroad is Health Insurance. One must also be aware of the travel advisories issued by the government of the home country, in order to take precautionary measures and avoid any situations which might add hassles later on. Thus, staying informed and taking care of the safety measures is something to look out for, at the time of departure.
With the above being taken care of, what comes to mind is the Housing & Accommodation – which is of great significance. The options that can be explored are On-campus or Off-campus. One would like to consider either of them, depending on the budget and nature of accommodation that is being offered which would increase the likelihood of staying at a particular locality. This should be taken care off in advance, so that one is free from the nitty gritty of the formalities and rigmaroles later on.
What is also recommended when one is planning for overseas studies is the Language Proficiency. In most cases the chances of language differing from the host (foreign) country is significantly high. In such a scenario, taking up language courses for upgradation and improvement is always advisable.
Being a frequent traveller, a person gets to know the schedule and procedure of moving out of a place & what will be required at the time of arrival. However, there are people who would not be aware of such things and those who fall under such a category should always plan the itinerary and book the tickets before-hand. Arranging for airport pickup or transportation to the accommodation is something high on the list.
One thing that people often neglect or ignore is the Cultural Awareness about the place of visit. Knowing the culture, customs & traditions of that region is of primary significance. Getting educated about the same is definitely going to work in one’s favour, as it helps in developing relations and maintaining networking with the local people, who will always come handy at the time of needing help or directions. Being open-minded and respectful towards others background & beliefs is something which costs nothing and only helps in receiving respect in return.
My advice to the travellers is also to take care of the health & well-being. Any necessary vaccinations or health check-ups before departure should be taken. In addition, carrying off any essential medications or prescriptions is a must, esp. for those needing medical aid on a regular basis, due to their health not being able to keep up with the daily workload or normal activities.
Communication is an essential point to be able to keep track of oneself in a new place, esp. that which is unknown and unacquainted with. Thus, ensuring that you have a working phone with an international plan or a local SIM card, will certainly be a great support. By staying in touch with family and friends back home can be a great morale booster, esp. in times of getting lost at a point or place and looking for a shoulder.
Even though there can be several more points that can to be kept in mind – as the list is endless, however we have tried to cover as many related heads as possible. Finally, those students who find this article of any help and would like to express their interest by joining an internantioanl program, will be provided a – Free Counselling Session at Inspired Overseas on September 30th, 2023.
